Emerging artist Kesha Lee looks to make her mark in the entertainment industry with new single ‘You Hurt Me’. Hailing all the way from Kansas City, Missouri, Kesha is combining her raw talent of singing with her passion for music bringing back heartfelt energy to R&B.
Her love for music started with her singing in a church choir as a child. At a very young age Kesha says she would perform all over her hometown and even sing at family gatherings.
“I used to do talent shows, sing at family gatherings, even at my grandmother’s funeral,” she shares.
Although she knew she could sing and did for many people, it wasn’t until Kesha recorded her first song that she considered pursuing music as a career.
She says “after I heard my sound, I was just like so happy with myself you know. I even started writing my own music too. So, from then, that’s just really what I wanted”.
Growing up in the church choir gave Kesha a strong foundation, but as far as preparing her to transition to R&B? That was a whole different experience. “It’s just a different type of sound,” she explains.
In addition, music runs deep in Kesha’s family. She’s related to the legendary singer Peabo Bryson. While having a musical icon in the family is cool, Kesha credits her father—also a singer and songwriter—for truly inspiring her.
“Watching him write music, go on tour, perform… that motivated me.”
With faith bigger than a mustard seed, Kesha is not waiting around for opportunities to fall in her lap. After dropping her single, she packed her bags and began pushing her music herself and connecting with radio stations and record label representatives across the country.
“Some people are afraid to take that leap of faith and network by themselves,” she admits. “But I’ve always wanted to be a star. I feel like I am a star… I don’t sound like anyone else.”
Kesha’s authentic and raw sound paired with emotion is something R&B hasn’t had much of in a long time and Her single You Hurt Me is a perfect example. Carrying the themes of pain, strength, and resilience, the song speaks to anyone who’s ever been hurt.
“I wasn’t even going through anything at the time—I just let the words flow from my heart…. I’m just expressing myself.” she explains.
For Kesha, music is more than just something to past time or a career, it serves as therapy. As she mentions, she knows what it’s like to struggle but she also knows how to get through it. When asked what advice she has for anyone experiencing tough times, she says “prayer works”.
Kesha adds “besides that, you have to do things that keep your focus on not being hurt. Keep yourself busy, do things that make you happy, and don’t be afraid to cut off the people who caused the pain.”
One thing that stands out about Kesha is her passion for music has the ability to move listeners when they hear her songs. As a lot of songs today are just about what’s trending or what’ll go viral, Kesha says “I want my music to be real, to speak to people”.
As Kesha’s fanbase continues to grow and her sound evolves, she reveals she is working on new music.
“I’m working on an EP right now. I don’t have a name for my project. So, before the end of the year, I’ll be dropping my EP.
