The March on Washington in 1963 was an iconic moment not only in our nations history but for the advancement of the African American community. As a result, this massive yet peaceful protest and rally influenced the passing of the Civil Rights Act just one year later.
While it’s been almost 63 years since the event took place, the upcoming anniversary is expected to draw in many people from all over including here in the scenic city and the the Chattanooga National Action Network is inviting you to join this years celebration for free.
Johnny D. Holloway with the organization is calling on residents to take part in a historic trip to Washington, D.C., as they are preparing to send buses to the upcoming march.
“This is a ministry of presence,” Holloway says. “All you got to do is show up.”
For those wanting to participate, buses are scheduled to leave Chattanooga from Hamilton Place Mall on the side of the food court at 6 p.m. on August 27th with a quick turn around the next day.
There are two bus captains helping coordinate the trip: Reverend Hogg at 423-227-0837 and Reverend Chetman at (423)-269-3158. Residents can also find information through chattanooganan.org.
When we march, we are together,” Holloway says. “When we march, we demand. When we march, we win.”
Holloway also mentions the ongoing work at the Alton Park Development Corporation, including the Johnny Holloway Museum, computer room, and a Black History research area where students and community members can learn about civil rights history in Chattanooga and across the country.
Holloway hopes more young people will take advantage of those resources. “We don’t have enough kids using them,” he says.
The work at the Alton Park CDC comes with significant financial needs. Holloway reveals a roof leak recently required nearly $20,000 in repairs, money that was loaned to the organization.
The group is now seeking community donations to help cover those costs and fund additional improvements.
