Comedian Desi Banks, known to fans as their “favorite cousin,” is bringing his comedy to Chattanooga’s Walker Theatre this weekend. He promises a live experience that goes beyond the skits online that helped make him a social media favorite.
Banks said much of his comedy comes from real-life experiences and the people around him, including family members, friends and everyday situations that audiences can relate to.
“We all got that same cousin, we all got that same uncle, we all got that same friend,” Banks explains, adding that he was inspired by comedy legends like Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence to create that same sense of connection.
Before comedy, Banks played football, and he said the sport taught him discipline, structure and teamwork, lessons he continues to use in his career today.
Banks is set to take the stage Friday, October 2nd at 7:30pm. Fans attending the show can also expect crowd work, which Banks says is always done with respect and a spirit of fun.
“It’s just jokes. We’re just having a good time,” he says.
The show is currently sold out, but Banks encouraged fans without tickets to join the waitlist through his website in case another show is added.
Looking back at his career, Banks says he is most proud of the growth that came from taking a chance on comedy and continuing to push forward, adding that “this comedy took me far and got me into a room that I never even thought about.”
